The Dream......
I have a dream......
A dream of a place where children can come and learn about horses......
A place where those children that wouldn't have the opportunity to do such finally will.
I have had the opportunity of working with some of the "greats" in the Arabian horse world - Avatar Al Sufi, The Pioneer V, Percussion, and many others. I have also had the opportunity to work with children via my days at the Boys & Girls Club of Burnet where one of our many field trips was to my friend's horse ranch in Kingsland. I have seen, and know from personal experience, the effect these magnificent creatures have on children.
Horses can be a child's best friend. They help teach patience, leadership, team work, respect, and responsibility - things that today's generation seem to be lacking due to the overabundance of electronic gadgets that do everything for them and discourage today's children from "getting in touch with nature".
So what is it EXACTLY that I wish to accomplish?
I want to be able to provide a place where underprivledged and inner city children are able to learn about horses, learn to ride, and develop lasting friendships with their fellow riders.
I want to be able to provide a overnight, week-long summer riding camp where children will learn the basics of horse care and basic riding skills. I also want to provide informational and educational field trips throughout the week to places such as The Bat Cave in Mason, Longhorn Caverns in Burnet, and The Exotic Resort Zoo in Johnson City. The culmination of the week's events would be a"horse show" that all parents, friends, and family are invited to attend so the children can "show off" what they have learned throughout the week. I also want to include teaching information from New Horizons Equine Education Center. They offer an excellent young equestrians series. All children would receive a special certificate of completion for this as well. I would like to see, eventually, this program develop to offer therapuetic riding as well. I also want to provide an after school program ( throughout the school year) that provides riding lessons for children that otherwise couldn't afford it.
This massive dream is just that - a dream - at this point. I long to do so much more and help other, less fortunate, children have the same experiences I did as a child, at a time when so many of them seem to need it most.
We are in the process of taking the first steps of bringing it to life and you can be a part of it.
